To the European Stroke Organisation Conference (ESOC) at the ICM: why Munich is the "perfect venue for international medical congresses".
The risk of suffering a stroke is rising. This makes progress in stroke research all the more important. To this end, the key events are major international congresses such as the European Stroke Organisation Conference (ESOC), which took place in Munich from May 24-26, 2023. 4.200 outstanding scientists from all over the world, including Norway, Ireland and Italy, met at the International Congress Center Messe München (ICM) for an exchange of information on advances in research and clinical care of patients with cerebrovascular diseases. This high-end medical event was also staged in the center of Munich where eye-catching flagging was part of the support provided by Munich Convention Bureau.

This is not least due to the attractiveness of Munich and its international visibility as a science location,” said Prof. Dr. Martin Dichgans, Director of the Institute for Stroke and Dementia Research at LMU Clinic Munich. “For Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU), Munich University Hospitals and the researchers here in Munich, this was certainly a great success.”
"Together with ICM, we have the chance to realize extremely diverse event formats – from plenary sessions with over 4,000 participants to intensive workshops for only 40 scientists,” Prof. Dichgans points out. “In addition, there are central and easily accessible exhibition and poster areas. This creates a compact congress format that enables intensive exchanges among the scientists attending.” Participants also had the opportunity to learn more about the benefits Munich has to offer at the ICM information booth.
According to Prof. Dichgans, the European Stroke Society Congress is now the leading international stroke congress. One congress focus that affects all events held nowadays is the topic of sustainability. Prof. Dichgans points out that a lot of thought had gone into this. For example, the Presidential Session featured a lecture by Christian Schulz on "Planetary Health - Adaptation, Mitigation and Resilience in Health Care Systems". In addition, he said, the focus of the congress included the use of public transport, elimination of disposable items, and provision of locally produced food.
